Ministry of Education (MOE) would like to refer to an article published in the New Straits Times dated 4 June 2010 by N.A.S, Kota Baru, Kelantan entitled Teaching Profession : Respect teachers for who they are.

The article raised the issue of teachers getting low salaries and having to carry heavy burdens which surpass their main tasks and responsibilities.

Under the Malaysia Remuneration System (SSM), teachers with a Diploma qualification are entitled to receive a minimum salary of MYR 1,405.71 and up to MYR 4,497.26 monthly. Whereas for teachers holding a Bachelors’ Degree are entitled to a minimum salary of MYR 1,474.65 and maximum salary of MYR 5,846.38. However, the starting salary for a particular teacher is determined by his or her level of academic qualification, therefore not all teachers will receive a starting salary at the minimum scale.

In addition to the salary, teachers enjoy the same allowances as other Civil Servants including Housing, Civil Service and Entertainment Allowance. They also enjoy other types of allowances such as Rural Area Incentive (BIP), Special Allowance based on Location and Hardship, Responsibility Allowance, Head Warden and Warden Allowance, Critical Service Allowance and many more which is subject to terms, condition and criteria set by the government.

Teachers are very fortunate that they are given abundant room for promotion and career advancement compared to other types of civil service. There are 17 paths for career advancement which include promotion to Excellent Teacher (Guru Cemerlang), Hakiki post, Time-Based and special promotion path for Ex-PPPLD teachers.

Therefore, MOE will always and continuously strive to improve and uphold the teaching profession aligned with the current development and changes in education and with the effort to change any negative public perspective on the profession.
